AbstractThis work describes an experimental and theoretical investigation of drying, self-ignition, flaming and smoldering of pine and embaúba cylinders, under a constant heat flux. The effects of moisture content on characteristic times, mass evolution and consumption rates are analyzed. Pine cylinders present self-ignition at all moisture levels, while embauba cylinders presented flaming only for moisture content below 30 %. It is verified that the moisture content influences all phases of the process. The char oxidation process was better described by the theoretical solution adopting a surface reaction with the mass transfer coefficient inversely proportional to the cylinder diameter. Other experimental aspects could be reasonably represented by the simplified theoretical model.
